The Etna, with its roughly 3.350 metres, is the highest volcano in Europe. Because of the continuous eruptions of the last few years it can be considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world. This vitality produces explosions in the highest parts which can sometimes be dangerous. The eruptive mouths of Etna are situated at the summit of the volcano and are: the Bocca Nuova, the Voragine, the Northeast and the Southeast Crater. On the slopes of the volcano there are also hundreds of small temporary cones generated through centuries during eruptions on the side slopes.

In the case of eruption it is important to respect the NO ENTRANCE signs to the indicated zones. Get next to the non authorised crater areas can be very dangerous even if there is no eruptive activity going on because explosions can happen very quickly and without warning.
All excursionists are kindly invited to observe the following specific indications:
 
1. In case of lavaflow: don’t go near a lavastream even when it’s are flowing regularly. The lava is very hot and emits gas. It can also cause falling of red hot rocks. Don’t walk on a lavaflow even after the end of the eruption because the heat is maintained for a long time.

2. In case of a sudden unexpected flow: the excursionists are required to follow scrupulously the instructions given by the expert Alpine Guides and Volcanologists. They are on no account to leave the group and must collaborate fully with those who are appointed to guarantee their safety. The Alpine Guides and Volcanologists are professional figures who accompany tourists in full respect of the laws in force, to the summit of the volcano so they can admire all its majesty in complete safety.

3. Following the continuous eruptive activity is the access beyond 2.920 metres not allowed (Torre del Filosofo), according to the directive of the prefecture of CATANIA of 24/05/2011 and successive extensions.

4. Clothing for the excursions: the Mountain require specific clothing and accessories. Trekking shoes and anoraks are recommended (these can also be rented at 2.500 metres).

5. Excursions are not recommended for those who have blood pressure or heart problems or those who suffer from asthma.
